Synaptics Introduces New Biometric Implementation with Slim Slide Fingerprint Sensor

SAN JOSE, Calif., Feb. 24, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Synaptics Inc. (NASDAQ: SYNA), the leading developer of human interface solutions, today announced an all new implementation of fingerprint ID technology for mobile devices, designed to simplify the user experience for consumers and expand the market for biometric solutions. As an extension of Synaptics' industry leading Natural ID™ product family, the VFS6170 slide sensor improves industrial design by integrating an ultra-slim biometric slide sensor on the side of a smartphone or tablet, enables single handed authentication, and further broadens the company's portfolio of fingerprint ID technologies available to OEMs.

With Synaptics VFS6170, OEMs have the ability to integrate an ultra-slim slide sensor on the side of the device, offering consumers a simplified and intuitive authentication method and giving users the ability to access their devices securely with a single handed thumb-swipe gesture. Additionally, Synaptics VFS6170 is designed to accelerate adoption in entry to mid-range devices by eliminating the need for a front glass cutout for the biometrics sensor, preserving the smooth-front industrial design and reducing total solution cost.

Key Features:

  • Ultra-Slim Design - At 2.8mm thin, the VFS6170 fits into narrow spaces such as the edge of a device.
  • Industrial Design - The VFS6170 can be incorporated into the side, volume rocker button for seamless integration and fewer, or no, cutouts to the front glass.
  • Innovative Usage Model - A side-mounted fingerprint sensor can be activated with one-handed operation for an improved user experience.
  • Lower System Cost - Moving the fingerprint sensor off the front glass eliminates the cost, complexity and yield loss associated with a front glass cutout.

"At Synaptics, striving for the ultimate user experience is at the core of what we do, driving us to develop the most innovative human interface solutions on the market today," said Ritu Favre, senior vice president and general manager of Biometrics Products Division, Synaptics. "As the adoption rate for fingerprint ID technology continues to increase and expand across broader markets, our slim slide sensor solution demonstrates our ability to broaden our product line and address the growing needs of our OEM partners."

Synaptics will be demonstrating its VFS6170 solution at Mobile World Congress 2015 in Barcelona from March 2-5 by appointment only in its private meeting space located at Stand 2G61 in Hall 2. Customers and suppliers are encouraged to contact their Synaptics partner to arrange a meeting at MWC. Media are encouraged to contact Synaptics@text100.com to arrange on-site interviews.
