Synaptics Announces Agreement with CityOne Network Communication Company, Ltd.

Synaptics Announces Agreement with CityOne Network Communication Company, Ltd. June 12, 2002 – San Jose, CA – Synaptics, a leader in touch pads and other human interface solutions for mobile computing and communications devices, and CityOne Network Communication Company, Ltd., today announced an agreement where Synaptics will develop and manufacture a TouchPad module for short text message input for integration into CityOne public access telephones in China. The module will combine Synaptics’ proprietary QuickStroke® Chinese character recognition software with a Synaptics capacitive TouchPad to form a stand-alone module designed for integration into public telephones, as well as home telephone handsets.

The telecommunications market in China is ideal for implementations of Synaptics technology because of the limitations of keypads for Chinese character and data input. To send a short message using a public telephone today, the user must type the pinyin phonetic spelling of a Chinese character using the Western alphabet on the telephone keypad. Synaptics’ character recognition software will allow the user to input Chinese characters using standard strokes. “This implementation of our QuickStroke and TouchPad products into public access and home telephones illustrates how Synaptics is leveraging its technology and diversifying into other emerging communication markets,” explains Synaptics President and CEO Francis Lee. “We are very excited to have the opportunity to work closely with CityOne to develop a customized interface solution to meet their unique requirements.”

“CityOne is looking forward to strengthening its relationship with Synaptics to develop interface solutions that will simplify and improve the way people interact with public access and private telephones throughout China,” says Zhao Guang, CEO of CityOne. “Synaptics advanced interface technologies will make our devices easier to use and more accessible for the vast majority of Chinese who have little knowledge of the keyboard and other cumbersome input systems.”
