Synaptics Achieves Milestone With Shipment of 100 Millionth Interface Solution

SAN JOSE, Calif., Jul 19, 2004 /PRNewswire-FirstCall via COMTEX/ -- Synaptics(R) Incorporated (Nasdaq: SYNA), a leading developer of interface solutions for mobile computing, communications, and entertainment devices, reached a major milestone this month with the shipment of over 100 million interface solutions. Since the inception of its first TouchPad(TM) product in 1995, Synaptics and its more than 130 OEM customers have joined forces to provide innovative user interfaces to a multitude of markets, including notebook PCs, MP3 players, and PC peripherals.

"The entry of Synaptics into the input device business heralded an era of increased mobile computing," said Roger Kay, IDC's Vice President of Client Computing. "One of my first and best forecasts was that touchpads -- which offer an intuitive user interface, a sealed surface, and space savings -- would take the market for mobile input devices by storm. At the time, I predicted that touchpads would make up 70% of the market three years after introduction. That forecast was spot on, and, since then, these devices have gone on to take over the market nearly completely."

After the development of the first TouchPad product, Synaptics quickly became the leading supplier of interface solutions to the mobile computing market. Since that time, the company's product offerings have expanded to address numerous other markets such as MP3 players, PC peripherals, ATM machines, and remote controls. As device content and functionality expands, Synaptics continues to find ways to leverage its core sensing and pattern recognition technologies into custom interfaces that enhance the end-user experience.

"This milestone illustrates the relevance of Synaptics interface technology not only in the PC market, but in numerous markets that require intuitive user interfaces," said Francis Lee, president and chief executive officer of Synaptics. "Shipping over 100 million interface solutions clearly demonstrates the viability of Synaptics technology in many applications, and is a testament to our focus on innovation and execution, and our ability to deliver unique and customized solutions."
